"Taras Bulba" is a novella by Nikolai Gogol included in the collection "Mirgorod". The events of this work unfold within the community of Zaporozhian Cossacks during the first half of the seventeenth century.
The storyline revolves around the uprising of Ukrainian Cossacks that took place between 1637 and 1638, which was ultimately suppressed by Hetman Nicholas Potocki. This historical event served as inspiration for Gogol's narrative, providing vivid examples of tragic fates experienced by its characters.
One possible prototype for Taras Bulba himself could be Akhim Makukha, born at the beginning of the 17th century in Starodub. He was a kurinni ataman (company commander) of the Zaporozhian Host who had three sons: Nazary, Khoma (Foma), and Omelko (Emelyan). Nazary betrayed his fellow Cossack comrades by siding with Poles due to his love for a Polish noblewoman; Khoma, whose character resembles Ostap from Gogol’s novel, died while attempting to deliver Nazary back to their father; Emelyan became an ancestor of famous explorer Nikolay Miklukho-Maklay and his uncle Grigory Ilyich Mikluho, who studied alongside Nikolai Gogol and shared family legends with him.
Another potential model might have been Ivan Gonta, although there are inaccuracies regarding claims about killing two children from his marriage to a Polish wife — both his spouse being Russian and the tale itself fabricated.
